Second Grade Programs
Adapt in the Habitat
SOL’S: Science- K.1, K.6, K.8, K.10, 1.1, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.8, 2.5, 2.7, 2.8 English- K.1, K.2, K.3, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3
Students will examine different habitats and learn how adaptation helps animals survive. They will also explore food chains and how animal adaptations help them to survive. Students will then create camouflage-inspired art.
Adventures in Early China
SOL'S: History and Social Science- 1.4, 1.6, 2.1, 2.4, 2.5 Science- 1.5, 1.7, 1.8, 2.5, 2.8
Prepare for a journey to the far east! Discover a culture halfway around the world by exploring the contributions of the Ancient Chinese people - from clothing to architecture and food to inventions. Students will practice geography skills by identifying places on a map and will participate in hands-on activities to further their knowledge of Ancient China.
American Indian Journey
SOL’S: History and Social Studies- 1.4, 1.6, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5 Science- 1.5, 1.7, 1.8, 2.5, 2.8
Explore how American Indian Tribes (Powhatan, Pueblo, and Lakota) adapted to different environments and made use of natural resources. Students will gain a greater understanding of American Indian culture through hands-on activities.
Economics Express
SOL’S: History and Social Science- K.6, K.7, K.8, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 1.10, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, 2.10, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9 Math- K.7, 1.7, 2.10, 3.8
Students will explore economics concepts by participating in role play. Students will produce goods to be sold and then buy goods as consumers. Key economic concepts covered include: needs and wants, goods and services, producers and consumers.
Geography
SOL’S: History&Social Science- 1.4, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 3.5 Oral Language and Reading- 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.9, 2.1, 2.3, 2.8, 3.1 Fine Arts- 1.1, 1.3, 1.5, 2.1, 2.4, 2.5, 2.9, 2.10
Students will explore grade specific geography concepts through literature and hands-on activities. Key geography concepts covered include: types of communities, vocabulary related to to maps and basic US geography. Students will use a key to create a topographical map.
Magnificent Magnets
SOL’S: Science-K.1, K.3, 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2
Students will investigate what makes magnets repel and attract, then will work through an array of hands-on magnet experiments and activities to gain further understanding.
Mapping Ancient Egypt
SOL’S: History and Social Science- 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6 Science- 1.5, 1.7, 1.8, 2.1, 2.5, 2.8
Explore the contributions of Ancient Egyptian people - from clothing to architecture and food to inventions. Hands-on activities will give students the experience to gain a greater understanding of Ancient Egyptian culture.
Math and Art

Students will apply mathematical thinking to create works of art. Students will use critical thinking to determine different types of patterns and predict what will come next. Students will look at patterns and symmetry in art, nature, and clothing. Then they will create an art project using patterns and symmetry.
Scientific Investigation
SOL’S: Science- K.1, K.4, K.5, K.9, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.3, 3.1, 3.3 Measurement- K.8, 1.10, 2.11, 2.14, 3.9, 3.13
Students will learn about and practice scientific investigation principles. They will work collaboratively to test their hypothesis by conducting an experiment.
Simple Machines
SOL’S: Science- 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 3.1, 3.2
Students will review the different types of simple machines and examine how simple machines help make work easier through literature and hands-on examples. They will work together to build a simple machines.
Weather Explorers
SOL'S: Science- K.1, K.5, K.8, 1.1, 1.6, 1.7, 2.1, 2.3, 2.6, 2.7, 3.1, 3.8, 3.9 Math- K.8, K.10, 1.14, 2.14
Students will lean about the water cycle, tools meteorologists use, and types of clouds. Students will gain greater understanding of how different types of clouds create different types of precipitation through hands-on demonstrations and an art activity.
