[Play of the Week] Muffin Tin Crayons

Blog Image:

We put PLAY in capital letters because it is so important to human development.

It is the vehicle children use to learn, cope, self correct and explore the world. CMoR is so dedicated to promoting play we incorporate it into everything we do.

Each week we will post on the website a new ‘PLAY of the Week’ activity for you to do with your family. It will be an unplugged activity that can be done at the dining room table, in the tub, at the park or just about any place.

Muffin Tin Crayons

Reuse those old broken crayons your kids use around the house by baking them into muffin tins!

What you'll need:

  • Cupcake/muffin tin
  • Non-toxic broken crayons (you can also buy a cheap set of crayons for this activity)
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Toothpick

How to make:

  • Preheat oven to 275 degrees F.
  • Remove all of the paper labels from the crayon pieces (Check to make sure they are all non-toxic crayons!)
  • Put 1/4 teaspoon of vegetable oil into each muffin cup. No cup liners are needed
  • You will be using the equivalent of 4 new crayons for each cup. Place the broken crayons (longer than an inch each) into the muffin pan. This will fill the cup about 1/3 full. *Optional: You can also separate the crayons into color categories to create solid colored crayons*
  • Place the pan into the preheated oven and watch carefully...they melt quickly!
  • Bake crayons for 8 minutes or so
  • When the crayons begin to melt, remove them from the oven and stir gently with a toothpick to blend the colors together
  • Let the crayons cool completely before popping them out of the muffin tins!
