ART CLASSES AT CMoR!
Learn drawing, watercolor, clay techniques and more in this 45-minute art class offered every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. for 3-6 year olds with an accompanying adult.

April 10 Circular Weaving
The class will introduce children to the ancient craft of handweaving. Children will experiment with dyeing fibers and weaving with beads and feathers. While creating their circular weaving, children will use color patterning, finger manipulation, and hand-eye coordination and concentration.
April 17 Ceramics – Sun Relief Sculpture
Children will learn basic clay techniques and create a slab relief sculpture based on the sun image in Aztec history. Learn more about the sun as an important theme in Mexican and Central American arts and crafts.
April 24 The Art of Eric Carle
Many admire the combination of Eric Carle’s collage and paint illustrations. Children will look at several of Carle’s books and then recreate some of the images from the stories using his methods. Children are invited to illustrate their own story.
May 1 Clay Pinch Pots
Children will learn basic knowledge about clay creating small vessels using the pinching process. The finished fired and glazed product will be ready for pickup two weeks later.
May 8 Scratch-Art
Kids will learn how to create their own scratchboard and discover the joy of creating a picture in reverse. Using a tool, children will scrape away the first layer of the surface uncovering the color underneath creating a picture at the same time.
May 15 Memory Boxes
Children will transform cigar boxes into decorated memory boxes using a variety of supplies. They will begin by drawing self-portraits and placing them inside their box. Children will get to look at photos of American artist Joseph Cornell’s assemblage boxes to gather inspiration.
May 22 Silhouette Trees
Children will work with watercolor washes, cut black paper, and torn colored paper to create a landscape. Children will place a large black silhouette of a tree in the foreground of the picture with painted horizontal lines in the background showing the illusion of space.
May 29 Wire Sculptures
Children will learn about the artist Alexander Calder and his famous wire circus. They will then experiment making sculptures using pipe cleaners and then make a wire sculpture using plastic-coated, colorful wire.
June 5 Amate Bark Painting
Amate Bark Paintings are one of the many Latin American Folk Art traditions. Children will learn about the colorful paintings created on paper made from tree bark. Children will then produce their own version of the bark paintings using bright colored tempura paint outlined in black featuring animal and bird shapes.
June 12 Clay Dinosaurs
After examining CMoR’s very own large-scale dinosaurs, children will create three-dimensional dinosaurs out of clay. Children will learn how to roll clay and score and slip to attach pieces together. Children will be given the opportunity to glaze their dinosaurs at a later date.
June 19 Felting
Children will work with wool to create felt. No knitting, weaving, or crocheting is necessary. Instead, this age-old craft is created using basic techniques with no experience necessary.
June 26 Georgia O’Keefe Inspired Flowers
Children will learn about the famous artist Georgia O’Keefe and then paint and decorate large-scale flowers using a variety of mediums.
July 3 Wind Chimes
Children will create their very own wind chimes using beads, bells, and flowerpots. They will have an opportunity to decorate their chimes using acrylic paint.
July 10 Miniature Clay Animals
Using simple shapes children will create animals out of polymer clay. After sculpting lots of small shapes, children will assemble them together to create finished animals. The animals will be baked to become permanently hard and ready for pick up one week later.
July 17 Fun with Watercolor Techniques
Kids will paint a summer landscape as they learn and utilize various watercolor techniques explored through a variety of materials including crayons, masking tape, salt, and wavy stencils.
July 24 Fruit Art
Children will create a vase made out of paper. Then using cut fruit, toothpicks, and straws, children will decorate their vase with flowers and other ornamentation. Photos will be taken of finished works of art.
July 31 Introduction to Drawing
Children will learn about the 5 basic elements of shape while experimenting with varied styles and different types of media including pen, pencil, and felt-tipped markers. Children will keep all of their work in their own drawing book.
